"The Background" began when Tim Power and Chris Colthart met as students of higher learning. Power was secretive about his compositional work, filling boxes with 4-track casio recordings that were not only amazing, but artistically unorganized.

Formal recordings occurred on the northernmost tip of Long Island. Chris worked the equipment and rode ferries; Tim wrote songs, sang, and wore flip-flops. Brian McCarthy played drums on two of the tracks. The as-yet unknown artist Jackie Gendel and multiinstrumentalist Donna Coppola added their voices to the murk.

The mixing process was laborious... 5 years of coltharsis. Enough time for Power to become a classics professor. Colthart and Coppola formed the Faraway Places, and "Matter of Time" appeared on a Japanese comp, Journey to End of Twilight: US Pop Life Vol 8 North East.
